The village of Maryland was built in the mid-19th Century as accommodation
for factory workers for the pottery industry established at this time. The
industry did not thrive and the village was empty by 1927. A fire on the island
in 1934 and bomb damage in the Second World War resulted in significant damage
to the buildings and this is the site today.
