The gap in the wall was the location of the gatehouse, and the property can be accessed from this point.  The access ramp may seem familiar to "Doctor Who" viewers as the area was a location for the episode "Amy's Choice".

In hindsight, I think I might have been better off visiting the castle at another point in the year; with the sun somewhat low in the sky, a lot of the interior was in deep shadow.
