P43007 - Workshop, Ickworth Estate, Suffolk - Ickworth Estate, Suffolk

This is a pastel and watercolour portrait of two of the Duchesses of Devonshire, painted by John Downman in 1785.  On the left is Lady Georgiana Spencer (1757-1806) and on the right is Lady Elizabeth Foster (nee Hervey, 1759-182) who married the Duke of Devonshire after Georgiana's death.  This artwork featured in the fourth series of "Hidden Treasures of the National Trust" when it underwent restoration, along with two "Election Dresses" worn by Lady Marjorie and Lady Phyllis Hervey for the 1906 election (which I didn't photograph as I'd forgotten about them; I rewatched the episode after my visit).
