For this event I decided to try out a location south of Whitecroft station where a public footpath crosses the line. However, I came away somewhat disappointed; the lighting aspects for morning photography weren't too bad, but the location was too close to Whitecroft station and down services had shut off steam at this point. Up services were better, but with the line's policy of generally facing locomotives north, meant I was photographing them bunker-first (as seen here). The location also had accessibility issues: I got to the crossing from the eastern approach which meant some road walking on a fairly busy road, but when I tried crossing the line to see what western access was like, I found the path blocked by dense overgrowth (not the first time I've found a Gloucestershire footpath in dire need of maintenance), so had to return the same way, which was made difficult by the fact that fencing wire had been run across a gap in the stile to the field, making getting over the stile somewhat more difficult (thank goodness for sturdy walking boots).
I don't think I'll be using this location for photography again, unless the accessibility issues are rectified.
