The historical significance of this bridge is that it is the site of the first confrontation between Royalist and Parliamentary forces of the English Civil War.  However, as the above plaque points out, it was little more than a skirmish; the first major battle took place at Edge Hill in Warwickshire on the 23rd October, 1642.

This is one of two plaques relating to the Civil War on the bridge, and is found at the south end.
