Until the Dissolution of the Monasteries by King Henry VIII in 1536, Evesham had an abbey, located immediately to the south of the Bell Tower (just off the right of this photograph); the paving slabs indicate where the walls were.  The Bell Tower was the last part of the Abbey built, being completed just before the Dissolution.

This is looking west across the site of the abbey; the slabs indicating the footprint of the building.  The area behind the wall at the rear of the photograph is intended to become a public area courtesy of the Evesham Abbey Trust.
